Nigeria’s U17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, continued their impressive campaign at the 2026 WAFU B U17 Girls Cup with a 2-0 victory over Burkina Faso on Monday. The encounter was played at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro, where the Nigerian side had to work patiently before eventually securing all three points.
The Flamingos controlled much of the opening half and showed their attacking intent by maintaining possession and pressing Burkina Faso high up the pitch. However, their dominance did not produce a goal as the Burkinabe defence remained organised and dealt with Nigeria’s attempts to create clear-cut opportunities.
Burkina Faso also had moments when they looked dangerous, but neither team was able to find the breakthrough before the interval. The first half therefore ended 0-0, despite Nigeria creating promising openings and continuing to push forward in search of an opener.
After the restart, the Flamingos stepped up their pressure and became more aggressive in the attacking third. Nigeria kept Burkina Faso pinned inside their own half for long periods and continued to create opportunities, while their pressure also resulted in several set-piece situations.
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 82nd minute. Mary Dunstan put Nigeria ahead with a well-taken finish, giving the Flamingos the reward they had been pushing for throughout the match. The goal also lifted the Nigerian team as they looked to protect their advantage and secure another victory.
Burkina Faso tried to respond, but Nigeria remained in control during the closing stages. The Flamingos continued to threaten and eventually added a second goal deep into stoppage time, with Oluwakemi Adegbuyi finding the back of the net to seal a 2-0 victory.
Adegbuyi’s late strike ensured that Burkina Faso had no opportunity to mount a comeback and completed another successful outing for the Nigerian youngsters. The result means the Flamingos have now collected nine points from three matches, maintaining a perfect winning record in the competition.
The victory also extends Nigeria’s unbeaten run at the tournament and strengthens their position at the top of the standings. The Flamingos entered the competition with experience from the inaugural WAFU B U17 Girls Cup held in Ghana two years ago, where they finished as runners-up.
With another three points secured, Nigeria will now shift their focus to their next fixture as they continue their bid to go all the way and claim the WAFU B U17 Girls Cup title.
