Akor Adams produced a dramatic late moment for the Super Eagles on Monday as his stoppage-time equaliser secured a 3-3 draw against Russia in an entertaining international friendly.
Nigeria appeared destined for defeat after falling two goals behind during the encounter, but a spirited response in the closing stages changed the outcome. Adams completed the comeback in the fourth minute of added time, calmly converting the final opportunity of a fast counter-attack to deny Russia victory.
The Super Eagles made an encouraging start to the match and were rewarded with an early goal inside the opening 15 minutes. Nigeria looked lively during the opening exchanges and created the impression that they were capable of controlling the contest.
Russia, however, gradually settled into the game and found a way back into the contest in the 30th minute. The equaliser shifted the momentum, with the hosts becoming increasingly influential as the match progressed.
Nigeria made changes at the beginning of the second half in an attempt to alter the direction of the game. Akor Adams and Abubakar Umar were introduced, replacing Michael Stephen and Kelechi Iheanacho as the coaching staff sought more attacking energy.
Despite the substitutions, Russia continued to pose problems and eventually established a two-goal advantage. The hosts moved 3-1 ahead, putting Nigeria in a difficult position and leaving the Super Eagles with a significant deficit to overturn.
Nigeria refused to give up, though, and began mounting sustained pressure as the game entered its final stages. The Super Eagles gradually found openings in the Russian defence and eventually reduced the deficit through Edokpolor Peter.
Peter had only recently entered the game when he made an immediate impact in the 78th minute. The substitute showed composure and individual skill to dribble past Russian defenders before finding the back of the net, cutting Nigeria’s deficit to 3-2.
The goal gave the Super Eagles renewed belief, and they continued to commit players forward in search of an equaliser. Nigeria made another change in the 83rd minute, with Vince Osuji coming on for Chibuzo Nwoko as the pressure on Russia intensified.
The late stages became increasingly tense as Nigeria pushed for one more opportunity. Russia attempted to protect its narrow advantage, but the Super Eagles continued looking for a breakthrough.
That breakthrough finally arrived in the fourth minute of added time.
Emmanuel Fernandez initiated the decisive counter-attack, quickly carrying the ball forward as Nigeria moved into attacking territory. Umar Abdullahi then provided the crucial assist, setting up Adams for the finishing touch.
With the clock already beyond 90 minutes, Adams remained composed and made no mistake with the opportunity. His finish sent the ball into the net and completed an extraordinary comeback for Nigeria.
From 3-1 down, the Super Eagles had fought their way back to 3-3, with Adams’ late intervention ensuring that Russia could not hold on to its advantage.
The draw will be remembered for Nigeria’s resilience, particularly the response after conceding a third goal. Although the Super Eagles had to settle for a draw rather than victory, the manner in which they recovered from a two-goal deficit provided a positive ending to a fiercely contested encounter.
For Adams, the decisive goal also capped an influential appearance, with his late finish proving to be the difference between defeat and a share of the spoils.
Nigeria’s ability to maintain its attacking intent despite trailing 3-1 ultimately paid off, as the Super Eagles refused to accept defeat and continued pressing until the final whistle. The dramatic 3-3 scoreline reflected a match that swung heavily in momentum and ended with both sides sharing the points.
