Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has warned his players that anyone who fails to meet the club’s standards will be excluded from the matchday squad, insisting that poor effort will not be tolerated.
The Portuguese tactician made the remarks while defending Vinicius Junior amid growing criticism of the Brazilian winger’s performances this season.
Vinicius has faced boos from sections of the Real Madrid supporters as he struggles to find his best form. The winger has also attracted attention following reports that he turned down a move to Arsenal during the summer transfer window.
Despite the criticism directed at the Brazilian, Mourinho maintained that he would not punish a player simply for going through a difficult spell, provided the player continued to give his best for the team.
The Madrid manager suggested that his main concern would be any player who failed to demonstrate the commitment and attitude expected of someone representing the Spanish giants.
Mourinho made it clear that players who do not conduct themselves in accordance with the club’s standards would not be allowed to remain in the matchday squad, regardless of their reputation or status within the team.
He said: “I promise you, when a Real Madrid stops behaving like a Real Madrid player, you will not even get a chance to boo him.
“And that’s because he won’t even get to sit on the bench.”
The comments underline Mourinho’s emphasis on discipline and professionalism as Real Madrid navigate a difficult period for some members of the squad.
Vinicius, who has been a prominent figure at the club, has come under pressure from supporters unhappy with his recent displays. However, Mourinho’s defence suggests that he is prepared to distinguish between a player struggling for form and one who is not making the necessary effort.
For the manager, performance levels may fluctuate, but commitment to the team and respect for the club’s expectations remain essential.
His warning also sends a message to the rest of the squad that no player is guaranteed a place in the team or even a spot on the substitutes’ bench if they fail to meet those standards.
