Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has reassured Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal following his failure to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or, expressing confidence that the young forward will have several opportunities to claim football’s most prestigious individual honour.
Yamal finished third in the final voting, behind France captain Kylian Mbappé and eventual winner Harry Kane, at the awards ceremony held at the London Palladium on Monday night.
Despite the disappointment, De la Fuente believes the 19 year old has the talent, potential and quality required to win the award multiple times during his career.
Speaking after the ceremony, the Spain manager urged Yamal not to be discouraged by the outcome, insisting that his abilities and long term prospects remain unquestionable.
“Lamine is going to win many Ballon d’Ors,” De la Fuente said, as quoted by Sportskeeda.
“He should rest easy, because we know who he is and the potential he possesses.”
The coach’s comments represent a strong vote of confidence in the Barcelona star, who has established himself as one of the most exciting young players in world football.
Although Yamal missed out on the main prize, his third place finish reflects the growing recognition of his performances and influence at the highest level. At just 19, he still has considerable time to develop his game and compete for individual honours in the coming years.
De la Fuente’s assessment also highlights the high expectations surrounding the winger, whose technical ability, creativity and attacking contributions have made him an important figure for both Barcelona and Spain.
The Spain manager has also enjoyed personal success at the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony, winning the Men’s Coach of the Year award after guiding the national team to World Cup glory.
His achievement further strengthened Spain’s presence at the ceremony and provided another reason for optimism about the country’s footballing future.
For Yamal, however, the immediate challenge will be to maintain his progress and continue delivering strong performances for Barcelona and the national team. With De la Fuente firmly backing him, the teenager will be encouraged to treat the Ballon d’Or disappointment as motivation rather than a setback.
While Kane took home this year’s award, De la Fuente remains convinced that Yamal’s opportunity to reach the summit of individual football recognition will come in the future.
