World Cup History Made! Mbappé Joins Legendary Club After Stunning Goal Feat Despite France’s Heartbreaking Defeat
Kylian Mbappé etched his name deeper into football history on Saturday after becoming only the fourth player ever to score 10 or more goals in a single FIFA World Cup tournament.
The France captain reached the remarkable milestone by scoring twice in Les Bleus’ thrilling 6-4 defeat to England in the 2026 FIFA World Cup third-place playoff. Although France fell short of ending the tournament with a victory, Mbappé’s clinical brace ensured he achieved a feat that has eluded the world’s greatest footballers for more than half a century.
Heading into the encounter, the Real Madrid superstar had already found the net eight times during the competition. His two goals against England took his tournament tally to 10, placing him alongside some of the biggest names in World Cup history.
Mbappé is now the first player in 56 years to score 10 or more goals in a single edition of the World Cup. The last player to achieve the feat was German legend Gerd Müller, who scored 10 goals at the 1970 tournament in Mexico.
Only three other players had previously reached double figures in a single World Cup campaign. Hungary’s Sándor Kocsis scored 11 goals at the 1954 tournament, while France’s Just Fontaine still holds the all-time record with an astonishing 13 goals at the 1958 World Cup. Müller’s 10-goal haul in 1970 completed the exclusive list before Mbappé joined it in 2026.
Players to score 10 or more goals in a single FIFA World Cup:
- Just Fontaine – 13 goals (1958)
- Sándor Kocsis – 11 goals (1954)
- Gerd Müller – 10 goals (1970)
- Kylian Mbappé – 10 goals (2026)
Despite France’s disappointing finish, Mbappé’s individual brilliance stood out throughout the tournament. His pace, movement, and finishing once again proved decisive as he consistently delivered on the biggest stage.
The achievement further strengthens the 27-year-old’s legacy as one of the greatest World Cup performers of the modern era. While the defeat to England denied France a podium finish, Mbappé leaves the tournament with another historic record to his name, joining an elite group of football icons whose World Cup scoring exploits have stood the test of time.
