Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has urged the club’s board to make further signings before the summer transfer window closes, insisting that the squad needs more quality and depth to compete across all competitions.
Carrick took charge of Manchester United on an interim basis after the club parted ways with Ruben Amorim following a difficult start to the 2025-26 season. The former United midfielder helped steady the team and guided the Red Devils to UEFA Champions League qualification, an achievement that subsequently earned him the permanent managerial position.
With the new season approaching, Carrick believes Manchester United must strengthen further if they are to compete for major honours. Speaking to BBC Sport, he acknowledged the financial considerations involved but stressed that the club must continue pushing to improve the squad and challenge for success in every competition.
“We want more, we need more, we keep looking for how we can do that, money’s money, I understand that,” Carrick said. “We believe we must strive for success in every competition we participate in, while remaining realistic about our recent history over time. For now, we must maximize our current situation, but we need to push every limit possible to achieve victory again.”
Manchester United have already strengthened their midfield with the arrivals of Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, moves aimed at replacing Casemiro, who left the club as a free agent. The club have also signed Karl Darlow as a backup goalkeeper for Senne Lammens after Altay Bayindir was loaned to Celta Vigo.
The Red Devils are still looking to add more players before the transfer window closes. Recent reports have linked them with Newcastle left-back Lewis Hall, while Real Madrid midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni has also reportedly emerged as a target, although there has been no significant progress on that potential deal.
Carrick’s comments underline his belief that Manchester United cannot afford to stand still after securing Champions League football. With a demanding season ahead, the manager wants the board to provide him with additional reinforcements so the team can compete more effectively on multiple fronts.
