Enzo Maresca has stepped down as Chelsea head coach, bringing an end to his 18-month spell at Stamford Bridge.
The Italian leaves with the Blues sitting fifth in the Premier League table, 15 points behind leaders Arsenal, after managing just one victory in their last seven league matches. Chelsea’s recent slump in form ultimately proved decisive despite silverware success under his watch.
Maresca guided Chelsea to triumphs in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup, achievements the club described as “important chapters” in its recent history. However, inconsistent domestic results and growing tension behind the scenes led both parties to conclude that a change was necessary.
In an official statement, Chelsea confirmed the separation, thanking Maresca for his contribution and wishing him well in his future career. The club added that with major objectives still in play across four competitions including qualification for next season’s Champions League, a new direction was required to revive their campaign.
Maresca’s final game in charge was Tuesday’s 2-2 Premier League draw against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge. He did not attend the post-match press conference, with the club citing illness, though the incident added to speculation that relations had become strained.
Chelsea are expected to name a new permanent head coach within days. Liam Rosenior is believed to be among several candidates under consideration, and the club is keen to have clarity before Sunday’s league clash away to Manchester City.
Maresca joined Chelsea in June 2024 on a five-year deal after winning the Championship with Leicester City. While his tenure delivered trophies and a return to the Champions League, a poor run of league results, internal disagreements, and mounting pressure from supporters eventually brought his time in west London to a close.
Chelsea now begin the search for their fourth permanent manager since the club’s takeover in 2022, with a demanding January schedule looming across domestic and European competitions.
