Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh has raised serious concerns about the state of Nigeria’s national football team following the conclusion of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Oliseh warned that the Super Eagles could face an uncertain future if those responsible for running the team fail to urgently tackle issues of discipline within the squad and shortcomings in its overall administration. According to him, continued neglect could strip the national team of its identity and competitiveness.
The former Juventus midfielder revealed that he had deliberately stayed silent for years despite observing what he described as a steady decline in Nigerian football, choosing not to speak publicly until now.
Speaking during an episode of Sunday Oliseh’s Global Football Insights, the former national team coach said the time had come to be honest about the challenges confronting the game in the country.
“My colleagues and I have stayed silent for years, but I will not remain quiet about the downfall of our football. We need to return to being respected,” Oliseh said.
He explained that he avoided making public comments during the 2025 AFCON in order not to distract the team while the tournament was ongoing.
“I didn’t speak during the competition because I wanted the football to speak for itself. Now that the trophy has been decided, it is time for the truth,” he added.
Oliseh concluded with a stark warning, stressing that failure to fix disciplinary and administrative problems could have long-term consequences.
“If we don’t get discipline and management right, there may soon be no Super Eagles left for Nigerians to support,” he said.
