Cape Verde have officially pulled out of their scheduled international friendly matches against Nigeria’s Super Falcons, creating an unexpected hurdle in the team’s preparations ahead of major continental competition.
The two friendly games had been arranged for Wednesday, April 15 and Saturday, April 18 at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne. The fixtures were part of Nigeria’s build-up plans as the Super Falcons continue to fine-tune strategies and assess squad depth ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
However, reports indicate that Cape Verde will no longer honour the matches, forcing the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) into a race against time to find a suitable replacement opponent. With the dates already fixed and the international window fast approaching, organizing new fixtures on such short notice may prove challenging.
The abrupt withdrawal could potentially disrupt the Super Falcons’ preparations, as friendly matches play a crucial role in maintaining match fitness, testing tactical setups, and building team chemistry before a major tournament.
Despite the setback, the Super Falcons are still expected to converge in Abuja for the training camp ahead of the proposed friendlies. The coaching crew will now have to adjust plans accordingly, depending on whether a new opponent is secured or alternative arrangements are made.
Head coach Justin Madugu and his squad had recently been in action during the last international break, where they played two matches against Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses. Those games provided valuable insight into the team’s strengths and areas needing improvement as they continue to prepare for upcoming challenges.
The 2026 WAFCON, scheduled to take place in July, remains a key focus for the Super Falcons as they aim to reinforce their dominance in African women’s football. As such, the NFF’s ability to quickly secure another opponent could play an important role in ensuring the team remains on track.
For now, uncertainty surrounds the planned fixtures, leaving fans and stakeholders awaiting further updates on whether a replacement team will be confirmed or if the schedule will be altered.
