Nigerian professional wrestler Isaac Odugbesan, popularly known as Oba Femi in World Wrestling Entertainment, has opened up about his journey from a promising athletics career to becoming a rising force in professional wrestling.
The 28-year-old recently grabbed global attention following a dominant display at WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas, where he defeated veteran superstar Brock Lesnar in under five minutes. In the bout, Oba Femi showed remarkable strength and composure, absorbing Lesnar’s signature F5 before finishing the match with a chokeslam and his trademark move, “Fall From Grace.”
Before his transition to wrestling, Odugbesan was a talented shot put athlete who competed for the University of Lagos at the National University Games, earning individual honours. His performances eventually earned him a move abroad in 2017 to further his education and sporting career.
Reflecting on his early ambitions, Odugbesan revealed that he had set his sights on competing at the highest levels of athletics. “I had aspirations to go to the World Championships, to go to the Olympics, to win medals—and I achieved some of that to a degree. I’ve been very successful in everything I do,” he said.
After relocating to the United States, he continued to excel in track and field, winning the SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships in 2021 and 2022, as well as the outdoor title in 2020. However, his career path took a different turn in 2021 when WWE scouts reached out to him through social media.
Recalling how the opportunity came about, he said, “They messaged me on Instagram and asked if I was interested in doing a trial. I said yes, and the rest is history.” He added that his physical presence and intensity likely caught their attention: “I’m guessing they saw the package—they saw the size. They saw some of my throwing videos where I showcased a lot of intensity.”
Odugbesan went on to explain how his background in athletics helped shape his transition into wrestling. “When you are an athlete, it’s a lifestyle. You become well-rounded as a person, and that is why my rise has been meteoric,” he noted.
Following a successful tryout in August 2021, he officially signed with WWE on December 8 under its Next In Line programme, which is designed to develop collegiate athletes into professional wrestlers.
His rapid growth in the sport has now culminated in a high-profile victory over one of wrestling’s biggest names, further cementing his status as a rising star. With his confidence, physical ability, and unique journey, Oba Femi continues to make a strong impression on the global stage while representing his Nigerian roots.
