Former Nigeria international John Obi Mikel has delivered a harsh assessment of Arsenal, claiming the Premier League leaders are beginning to lose direction at a crucial stage of the title race.
Arsenal’s recent slump continued after a 2–1 defeat to AFC Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium, a result that has reduced their advantage at the top of the table. With only a six-point lead remaining after 32 matches, Manchester City have closed the gap significantly, especially with two games in hand.
City’s emphatic 3–0 win over Chelsea further intensified the pressure on Arsenal, setting up a tense run-in that could decide the destination of the title.
Speaking on his Obi One Podcast, Mikel expressed concern over Arsenal’s performances, suggesting the team appears to have lost creativity and confidence in key moments of the season.
“Arteta has to find a way to motivate this team,” Mikel said.
“For me, they look like a team that has run out of ideas. They have no clue. When you watch this Arsenal side, there’s nobody willing to take responsibility on the pitch. There’s nobody willing to be ‘that guy’ who says, ‘I’m going to create the chances; I’m going to make us play well.’”
Mikel compared Arsenal unfavourably to Manchester City, arguing that Pep Guardiola’s side feature more unpredictable and exciting attacking players who can change games individually.
“It’s different when you watch City. They have so many players who get you off your seat—players you’d pay your hard-earned money to watch. But when I watch this Arsenal side, name me one player right now who truly excites you. Nobody. Absolutely zero,” he added.
The former Chelsea midfielder also suggested that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta may be restricting the natural creativity of key players such as Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard through his tactical system.
“Bukayo is that guy, but the way Mikel has structured this team has taken so much away from the creative players. We know what Ødegaard and Saka can do, but none of them are doing it right now,” Mikel said.
He went further to argue that Arsenal’s style has become overly rigid and lacks flair, claiming it has affected the team’s confidence in expressing themselves on the pitch.
“It’s very static, boring, and even pathetic to watch. Motivation and freedom are the keys,” he concluded.
With just six matches remaining, the Premier League title race remains finely poised, and Arsenal’s upcoming clash with Manchester City is expected to play a decisive role in determining who finishes top of the table.
