Antoine Semenyo has revealed that his decision to represent Ghana national football team at international level came naturally, despite being eligible to play for both England and France.
The Manchester City forward explained that he never seriously considered switching allegiance away from Ghana, describing the opportunity to play for the Black Stars as one he could not turn down.
Semenyo, who officially committed his international future to Ghana in 2022, said the decision was straightforward, particularly as he was not heavily involved in England’s setup at the time.
“I was 20, 21 when Ghana came calling. I couldn’t say no to playing for the first team, so it was an easy choice,” he said in an interview on The Mixer podcast.
He further emphasized that there was little doubt in his mind about which nation to represent, noting that other options were never seriously on the table.
“No, it was never a hard decision. I wasn’t even in England’s top ranking like that anyway,” Semenyo added.
Born with eligibility to play for multiple countries, Semenyo ultimately chose to represent his heritage, a decision that has since seen him grow into an important player for Ghana on the international stage.
Since making that commitment, he has continued to establish himself as a key attacking option for the Black Stars, contributing to their campaigns in major competitions and strengthening his reputation at both club and international level.
His comments offer insight into the personal and professional factors that influence international allegiance, highlighting how opportunity, timing, and connection to national identity can shape a player’s career path.
