Nigeria’s football authorities are stepping up efforts to secure fresh attacking talent, with the Nigeria Football Federation reportedly initiating talks with rising striker William Osula over a potential international switch.
Osula, who is currently contracted to Newcastle United in the English Premier League, finds himself at the center of an international tug of war. Eligible to represent Nigeria through his father, the 22 year old forward also has strong ties to Europe, having been born to a Danish mother and a father of French Nigerian heritage.
Despite progressing through Denmark’s youth ranks, Osula has long been vocal about his connection to Nigeria. His international future, however, remains undecided. Earlier this year, he received his first senior call up to the Danish national team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in March. Yet, in a twist that has fueled speculation, he did not make an appearance in any of those matches, leaving the door open for a possible switch.
According to football journalist Farzam Abolhosseini, the NFF has already taken concrete steps by establishing initial contact with the striker. This move signals Nigeria’s intent to strengthen the Super Eagles squad with foreign based players who have dual nationality.
Osula’s situation reflects a broader trend in international football, where players with multicultural backgrounds must choose where their loyalties lie. For Nigeria, landing a young Premier League striker could be a significant boost as they look ahead to future competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 World Cup.
Still, the final decision rests with Osula. Whether he will embrace the green and white of Nigeria or continue his journey with Denmark remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the race for his international allegiance is heating up fast.
