Nigerian midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru is on the verge of making history as he prepares to feature in the Coppa Italia final with SS Lazio next month.
Dele-Bashiru will be aiming to become the fifth Nigerian to lift the prestigious Italian domestic cup when Lazio face Inter Milan in the final. The Rome-based club secured their place in the showpiece match after overcoming Atalanta BC in a tense semi-final encounter that was decided on penalties.
A victory in the final would see Dele-Bashiru join an exclusive group of Nigerian players who have previously won the competition. Former Super Eagles striker Obafemi Martins was the first to achieve the feat, with Joel Obi, Ogenyi Onazi, and Ebenezer Akinsanmiro later adding their names to the list.
Beyond the national milestone, the match also represents an important personal opportunity for the 24-year-old, who is still chasing his first major trophy since joining Lazio from Hatayspor two years ago. His development at the club has been steady, and lifting the Coppa Italia would mark a significant breakthrough in his career.
The final is scheduled to take place on May 13 at the historic Stadio Olimpico in Rome, where Lazio and Inter Milan will battle for silverware. With both teams boasting strong squads and rich histories, the encounter is expected to be fiercely contested as Dele-Bashiru looks to etch his name into Nigerian and Italian football history.
