FIFA has officially approved two new situations in which the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) can intervene during matches at the upcoming World Cup.
Under the updated regulations, VAR officials will now be allowed to review and correct corner kick decisions that are deemed to have been awarded incorrectly by the on field referee.
In addition, yellow cards can also be reviewed if officials believe the caution was issued in error following a video review.
The changes mark a significant expansion of VAR’s role, although FIFA has clarified that the technology’s powers remain limited to specific incidents.
Apart from these two newly added situations and the existing categories already covered under VAR protocols, no other refereeing decisions will be eligible for review.
Football’s governing body hopes the adjustments will improve officiating accuracy while preventing unnecessary interruptions to the flow of matches.
The new rules are set to be implemented throughout the tournament, with officials expected to receive additional guidance on how the expanded VAR system will operate during games.
