Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has provided a positive update on Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of his side’s upcoming international friendly against Nigeria.
The Seleção das Quinas are set to take on the Super Eagles on Wednesday, June 10, after facing Chile in another friendly fixture on Saturday.
Speaking during a pre-match press conference, Martinez expressed confidence in Ronaldo’s condition, indicating that the veteran forward is fully prepared for the international assignments.
The 41-year-old captain remains a key figure in the Portuguese squad and is expected to play an important role as the team continues its preparations for future competitions.
While discussing his squad, Martinez revealed that Manchester City defender Matheus Nunes will miss the clash against Chile due to fitness concerns. The Portugal boss explained that the medical team decided against taking any risks with the player, although there is hope he could recover in time for the encounter with Nigeria.
Martinez also addressed the fitness of João Félix, stating that the attacker would undergo a final assessment after training before a decision is made on his participation against Chile.
However, there were no such concerns regarding Ronaldo, with the Portuguese captain reportedly fit, available, and ready for action.
The former Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus star has continued to demonstrate his importance to the national team despite his age, remaining one of Portugal’s most influential players on and off the pitch.
His expected involvement against Nigeria will be a major boost for Portuguese supporters and adds extra excitement to the friendly encounter, with fans eager to see the legendary forward in action against the Super Eagles.
Portugal will use the two friendlies as an opportunity to fine-tune preparations and evaluate their squad, while Nigeria will view the match as a valuable test against one of Europe’s football powerhouses.
With Ronaldo available and in good condition, Martinez will be hoping his captain can once again lead by example when Portugal face Nigeria next week.
