Mbappé Makes History as France Storm Into the Knockout Stage With Dominant Win Over Iraq
France booked their place in the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a commanding 3-0 victory over Iraq in a weather disrupted Group I clash at Philadelphia Stadium. Captain Kylian Mbappé marked his 100th appearance for Les Bleus with a brilliant brace, while Ousmane Dembélé scored his first ever goal at a major international tournament as Didier Deschamps’ side maintained their perfect start to the competition.
The match was heavily affected by severe thunderstorms, with the half time interval lasting two hours and 10 minutes before play resumed. Despite the lengthy delay, France remained in complete control after the restart, securing their second consecutive victory to guarantee qualification for the Round of 32.
France began the match brightly and took the lead after just 14 minutes through Mbappé. The captain exchanged a slick one two with Michael Olise before curling an outstanding finish beyond Iraqi goalkeeper Ahmed Basil, who managed to get fingertips to the shot but could not prevent it from finding the net. The goal continued Mbappé’s remarkable scoring run and ensured he celebrated his century of international appearances in style.
Iraq attempted to respond after the first half hydration break when star striker Aymen Hussein was forced off through injury and replaced by Ali Al Hamadi. The substitute immediately made an impact, directing a header narrowly wide to provide Iraq with their best opportunity of the opening half.
Mbappé almost produced one of the goals of the tournament moments later after capitalising on a loose pass from Zaid Ismael. Spotting Basil off his line, the French captain attempted an audacious strike from near the halfway line, but the effort drifted over the crossbar.
Following the extended weather delay, Iraq gifted France a second goal just nine minutes into the second half. Defender Zaid Tahseen played a short goal kick that struck goalkeeper Ahmed Basil, whose heavy touch allowed Dembélé to seize possession. Rather than shooting himself, the Paris Saint Germain winger squared the ball for Mbappé, who calmly rolled it into an empty net for his second goal of the evening and his fourth of the tournament.
France continued to dominate. Michael Olise nearly added a spectacular third when his delicate lob struck the crossbar before Dembélé forced another excellent save from Basil. Adrien Rabiot was unable to convert the rebound, heading wide from close range.
Dembélé eventually received the reward his lively display deserved in the 66th minute. After firing into the side netting moments earlier, the winger produced a brilliant turn inside the penalty area before drilling a low finish underneath Basil to score his first goal in either the FIFA World Cup or UEFA European Championship after 20 appearances across the two tournaments.
Iraq continued to battle despite the deficit and nearly grabbed a consolation late on when Ali Al Hamadi slid in under pressure from Lucas Digne, but he was unable to direct his effort on target. France finished the stronger side, with Mbappé narrowly missing the opportunity to complete his hat trick when he fired wide in the closing stages.
The evening was another historic one for Mbappé. His two goals moved him onto 16 career World Cup goals, taking him level with Miroslav Klose and leaving only Lionel Messi, who now leads the all time World Cup scoring chart with 18 goals, ahead of him. Mbappé also became just the fourth player in history to score two or more goals in at least three consecutive World Cup appearances, joining Sándor Kocsis, Guillermo Stábile and Lionel Messi. Six of his World Cup matches have now produced two or more goals, more than any other player in the competition’s history.
The France captain also reached another significant milestone by becoming the youngest player to make 100 appearances for the French men’s national team at 27 years and 184 days. His opening strike continued another notable trend, with two of his last three World Cup goals now coming from outside the penalty area after only one of his first 13 had been scored from long range.
Dembélé’s contribution was equally significant. His assist for Mbappé was the fourth time he has set up the French captain, accounting for four of his five international assists. His goal also ended a frustrating wait, arriving in his 20th appearance at a major tournament after previously holding the unwanted record of the European forward with the most appearances in the World Cup and European Championship without scoring.
Michael Olise continued his impressive start to life on the World Cup stage with another outstanding creative display. After providing the assist for France’s opening goal, he finished the evening with three assists from his first two World Cup appearances, one more than he managed across his first 17 matches for France. He also became only the third French player this century to register two assists in a single World Cup match, following Karim Benzema in 2014 and Antoine Griezmann in 2022.
For France manager Didier Deschamps, the victory represented another landmark achievement. It was his 16th World Cup victory as France coach, equalling the all time managerial record previously held by Germany’s Helmut Schön.
The defeat leaves Iraq facing elimination. They have now lost all five of their World Cup matches, with only El Salvador enduring a longer losing streak at the tournament. Iraq also became the first Asian nation to lose each of its opening five World Cup matches. Defensive mistakes have continued to undermine their campaign, with only Tunisia committing more errors leading directly to goals at the 2026 World Cup.
France’s perfect start guarantees their place in the knockout rounds and extends their remarkable consistency at major tournaments. Les Bleus have now reached the knockout stage in eight consecutive major international competitions, with only Argentina enjoying a longer active streak of 14, including the 2026 World Cup.
With two wins from two matches, France have firmly established themselves as one of the favourites to challenge for the world title, while Iraq must now defeat Senegal in their final group match and hope other results go their way to stand any chance of progressing as one of the best third placed teams.
