World football governing body FIFA has imposed a five-match suspension on Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo following a dangerous challenge that left Canada’s Ismael Koné with a serious leg injury during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The incident occurred in Qatar’s heavy 6-0 defeat last Thursday, where Madibo was sent off after a tackle that resulted in Koné suffering fractures to both the tibia and fibula in his left leg.
After reviewing the incident, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee ruled that Madibo was guilty of serious foul play and handed him a five-match ban. The Qatari player retains the right to contest the punishment through an appeal.
Koné, 24, who plays club football for Italian side Sassuolo, underwent surgery in Vancouver shortly after the match.
In a gesture of support, Madibo later visited the injured Canadian midfielder in hospital as he began his recovery process.
