Defending champions Argentina continue their quest to retain the FIFA World Cup when they face tournament debutants Cape Verde in the Round of 32 in Miami. Although Lionel Scaloni’s side are widely expected to progress, Cape Verde have already emerged as one of the biggest surprise packages of the tournament after reaching the knockout stage without suffering a defeat.
Argentina arrive with maximum confidence after finishing top of Group J with three victories from three matches. Having already secured qualification with wins over Algeria and Austria, the South Americans completed a perfect group campaign by defeating Jordan 3-1. Giovani Lo Celso opened the scoring with a well-struck free kick before Lautaro Martínez doubled the lead from the penalty spot. Jordan briefly reduced the deficit through Mousa Al Tamari, but substitute Lionel Messi wrapped up the victory with another trademark finish.
Messi’s latest goal added yet another chapter to his remarkable World Cup legacy. The Argentina captain has already become the tournament’s all-time leading scorer after moving ahead of Miroslav Klose, while his strike against Jordan made him the first player ever to score in seven consecutive World Cup appearances. During that remarkable streak, Messi has found the net 11 times and has continued to dominate knockout football, contributing five goals and four assists across his previous five elimination matches.
Argentina’s strength from set pieces could once again play a decisive role. With Messi and Lo Celso both capable of delivering dangerous dead-ball situations, Scaloni’s side possess multiple ways of breaking down well-organised defences.
Cape Verde, however, have shown throughout the tournament that they are extremely difficult to beat. Competing at the World Cup for the first time in their history, the Blue Sharks negotiated a challenging group by drawing all three of their matches. They earned impressive goalless draws against Spain and Saudi Arabia before producing an entertaining 2-2 draw with Uruguay, results that secured second place in Group H and a historic place in the knockout rounds.
Their defensive resilience has been one of the tournament’s biggest success stories. Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha has played a leading role, becoming only the third goalkeeper aged 40 or older to record multiple clean sheets at a FIFA World Cup. His performances have placed him alongside legendary names Peter Shilton and Dino Zoff in the competition’s record books.
Cape Verde’s unbeaten start has also earned them several historic milestones. They are the first nation since Senegal in 2002 to avoid defeat in each of their opening three World Cup matches on debut, while becoming the first team since Chile in 1998 to reach the knockout rounds after drawing all three group-stage games. Only Wales, Cameroon and the Republic of Ireland had previously opened a World Cup campaign with three consecutive draws.
Despite those achievements, Argentina’s pedigree in knockout football makes them overwhelming favourites. The reigning champions have extensive experience navigating high-pressure elimination matches, even if many of them have required extra time. Seven of Argentina’s last 13 World Cup knockout fixtures have gone beyond 90 minutes, including dramatic victories over the Netherlands and France during their triumphant 2022 campaign.
This will also be the first-ever meeting between Argentina and Cape Verde. Argentina have enjoyed an excellent record against African opposition at the World Cup since losing to Cameroon in the opening match of the 1990 tournament, winning each of their last seven encounters against teams from the continent.
For Cape Verde, the challenge is historic in more ways than one. They become only the third nation to face the defending World Cup champions in the knockout rounds during their debut appearance at the tournament, following Norway in 1938 and Ghana in 2006. While the odds are firmly against them, their disciplined displays against Spain and Uruguay suggest they possess the organisation needed to frustrate elite opposition.
Statistical projections heavily favour Argentina’s chances of advancing. According to the Opta supercomputer, based on 25,000 pre-match simulations, the reigning champions win the match inside normal time in 83.5 percent of scenarios. Cape Verde claim victory in just 5.3 percent of simulations, while the remaining 11.2 percent finish level after 90 minutes.
When the possibility of extra time and penalty shootouts is included, Argentina’s probability of reaching the Round of 16 rises to 89.8 percent. Cape Verde, despite their inspiring campaign, progress in only 10.2 percent of the simulated outcomes.
Although the numbers strongly support Argentina, knockout football has often produced unforgettable surprises. Cape Verde have already defied expectations simply by reaching this stage, while Argentina know that complacency against a disciplined opponent could prove costly.
With Messi chasing more history and Cape Verde aiming to author one of the greatest upsets the World Cup has ever witnessed, Miami is set to host a fascinating contest between the tournament favourites and one of its most inspiring underdog stories.
