Super Eagles winger Moses Simon has thrown his support behind Eric Chelle remaining as head coach of the Nigerian national team, praising the Franco-Malian tactician’s leadership, man-management and the positive atmosphere he has created within the squad amid reports that he is set to sign a new long-term contract.
Chelle, who was appointed on an initial two-year deal, is currently in the final year of his contract, which is due to expire at the end of 2026. However, reports indicate that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), in collaboration with the National Sports Commission (NSC), is putting the finishing touches to a new agreement that would keep the former Mali coach in charge of the Super Eagles beyond his current deal.
According to reports, the proposed contract would see Chelle earn a monthly salary of $100,000 while also assuming responsibility for the Olympic Eagles as part of a wider restructuring of Nigeria’s national team coaching setup. The long-term project is reportedly expected to run until 2030, with the major objectives including winning the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and securing qualification for the 2030 FIFA World Cup after Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2026 edition.
Speaking about Chelle’s impact on the team, Simon said the coach has quickly earned the respect and trust of the players through his personality, leadership style and willingness to stand by his squad in difficult moments. The Nantes winger described Chelle as a father figure within the dressing room, adding that the players appreciate the coach’s commitment and determination.
Simon also praised Chelle’s competitive mentality, saying the coach constantly encourages his players to give everything for the team whenever they step onto the pitch. According to the winger, Chelle’s fighting spirit has inspired the squad to play with greater commitment, while his readiness to defend his players has strengthened the bond between the coach and the team.
The Super Eagles forward added that the unity within the squad has significantly improved under Chelle’s leadership, insisting that the players are now prepared to give everything for the country, their coach and one another. Simon said he was pleased by reports suggesting Chelle would remain in charge, expressing confidence that continuity would benefit the national team in the years ahead.
Chelle has made an encouraging start to his tenure with the Super Eagles, overseeing an unbeaten run in competitive fixtures while helping to restore confidence within the squad after a difficult period for the three-time African champions. His emphasis on organisation, discipline and team spirit has earned praise from several senior players, with growing optimism that stability on the coaching bench could provide the foundation for future success as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers and begins its journey towards the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
