Nigeria international Stanley Nwabali has completed a return to South African Premier Division side Chippa United, bringing an end to months of uncertainty surrounding his club future.
The 30-year-old goalkeeper had parted ways with the Eastern Cape club earlier this year after requesting the termination of his contract, a decision that fuelled expectations of a move elsewhere. However, despite attracting interest following his impressive performances for Nigeria, a permanent transfer failed to materialise during the window.
Chippa United confirmed Nwabali’s return on Sunday, announcing that the Super Eagles goalkeeper will once again be part of the squad ahead of the new season.
In a statement released by the club, Chippa United welcomed the shot-stopper back, expressing delight at his return after his brief spell away from the club.
Nwabali initially joined Chippa United from Nigeria Premier Football League side Katsina United in 2022 and quickly established himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper. During his first spell, he made 66 league appearances, earning a reputation as one of the most reliable goalkeepers in South Africa’s top flight.
His stock rose significantly after starring for Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he played a crucial role in the Super Eagles’ run to the final. His commanding displays, shot-stopping ability and composure under pressure attracted attention from clubs across Africa, Europe and the Middle East.
Although a move away appeared likely after his departure from Chippa United in February, no deal was completed before the start of the new campaign. His return now gives the club an experienced goalkeeper with extensive Premier Soccer League experience and international pedigree.
For Chippa United, Nwabali’s comeback represents a significant boost as the club prepares for the upcoming season. His familiarity with the team’s environment and coaching staff should allow him to settle in quickly and compete immediately for the starting role.
The move also provides the Super Eagles goalkeeper with an opportunity to regain regular first-team football as he continues to strengthen his place in Nigeria’s squad ahead of future international competitions.
