Arsenal made an impressive start to their 2026-27 Premier League title defence, beating newly promoted Coventry City 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium. The defending champions quickly established control of the match and never looked seriously threatened, giving Mikel Arteta’s side a perfect opening-night result.
Kai Havertz opened the scoring in the 15th minute after good work involving new signing Christos Tzolis and Riccardo Calafiori. Bukayo Saka then doubled Arsenal’s advantage just eight minutes later, finishing from close range after Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth could only parry Tzolis’ cross into his path. Arsenal went into half-time with a comfortable two-goal lead.
Martin Ødegaard added Arsenal’s third goal just four minutes after the restart. The captain’s effort was not cleanly struck, but Rushworth was wrong-footed and unable to recover in time. Arsenal continued to push for more goals, but Rushworth made several good saves to keep the score at 3-0.
Havertz was one of Arsenal’s standout performers and continued his excellent recent scoring form. His goal means he has now scored in four consecutive starts at club level, his longest such run since his time at Bayer Leverkusen. Arteta’s decision to start Havertz ahead of Viktor Gyökeres therefore proved successful.
There were also positive signs from Lewis-Skelly, who stepped into midfield following Bruno Guimarães’ groin injury. The 19-year-old completed a game-high 76 passes and helped Arsenal maintain control of possession. Tzolis also looked lively on his debut, creating problems for Coventry throughout the early stages.
The victory was particularly significant for Arteta, who recorded his 150th Premier League win as Arsenal manager. He became only the fifth manager to reach that total in fewer than 250 Premier League games, joining Pep Guardiola, José Mourinho, Jürgen Klopp and Alex Ferguson.
For Coventry, the return to the Premier League after more than 25 years ended in disappointment. Frank Lampard’s side struggled to create meaningful chances and were unable to score, although Jack Rudoni came close to a consolation goal late in the match. Coventry will need to improve quickly as they prepare for their next fixture.
Overall, Arsenal looked organised, confident and comfortable throughout the contest. The 3-0 victory sends an early message that the champions intend to compete strongly again this season, while Coventry face a difficult task adapting to life back in the Premier League.
