Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes has urged supporters to continue showing respect for Cristiano Ronaldo amid the recent disagreement between the veteran forward and head coach Jorge Jesus.
Fernandes made the remarks ahead of Portugal’s UEFA Nations League clash with Norway, following Ronaldo’s departure from the national team camp after his reported disagreement with Jesus.
Ronaldo’s exit has generated strong reactions among Portuguese supporters, with fans backing Jesus during Portugal’s 4-2 victory over Denmark.
Fernandes, however, called for unity and insisted that the situation should not divide the country.
“We are completely outside the matter. We are aware of what you are saying and what we are seeing,” Fernandes said.
He added that Portuguese supporters should avoid taking sides and instead respect the different perspectives surrounding the situation.
According to Fernandes, Ronaldo remains a major figure in Portuguese football and deserves recognition regardless of individual opinions about him.
“Cristiano Ronaldo deserves the respect of all Portuguese people, regardless of who likes him more or likes him less,” he said.
