Manchester United’s board has reportedly identified Unai Emery and Julian Nagelsmann as the leading candidates to replace Michael Carrick if the club decides to dismiss the Englishman as head coach.
According to The Guardian, the two managers have emerged as the main options being considered by United’s hierarchy amid growing concerns over the team’s recent performances and disappointing results.
The Red Devils are enduring their worst start to a season since 1986, with their struggles further highlighted by a heavy 4 1 defeat to Como in the UEFA Champions League.
Carrick is facing mounting pressure at Old Trafford after Manchester United failed to record a victory in their last seven matches across all competitions. The poor run has intensified scrutiny of his position and raised questions about whether he will remain in charge for much longer.
Despite the growing uncertainty surrounding his future, Carrick is still expected to lead the team when Manchester United host Bournemouth in Sunday’s Premier League fixture.
However, the defeat to Como on Wednesday has reportedly increased the urgency within the club to consider possible alternatives in the event that the former midfielder is relieved of his duties.
Emery and Nagelsmann are both admired by members of the Manchester United board, according to the report, making them the leading names under consideration should the club decide to make a managerial change.
Emery is currently in charge of Aston Villa, where he has established himself as an experienced manager in English football. His existing contract with the Midlands club runs until 2029, meaning United would potentially have to negotiate with Villa if they decided to pursue his appointment.
Nagelsmann, meanwhile, is available after leaving his position as head coach of the German national team following Euro 2024. His availability could make him an attractive option for United as they assess their next move.
For now, Carrick remains in charge, with Sunday’s home encounter against Bournemouth coming at a crucial point in his tenure. Manchester United’s results in the coming matches could prove significant as the club weighs its options and considers whether to continue with the current manager or appoint a successor.
