Turkish football analyst Bülent Timurlenk has expressed reservations about Victor Osimhen becoming Galatasaray’s next captain, arguing that the Nigerian striker’s emotional nature could make the leadership role difficult despite his outstanding contributions to the club.
With Mauro Icardi no longer expected to wear the captain’s armband, Galatasaray are considering a new team leader ahead of the upcoming campaign. Osimhen has emerged as one of the leading candidates, while Turkish defender Abdülkerim Bardakcı is also being strongly considered after captaining the side on several occasions last season.
Head coach Okan Buruk has previously praised Osimhen’s leadership qualities, suggesting he has the personality to help guide the team. However, Timurlenk believes the forward’s reactions during matches could count against him.
According to the football pundit, Osimhen’s commitment and determination are unquestionable, but his tendency to show frustration toward referees, opponents, and even teammates raises concerns about his ability to lead the squad effectively. He added that although the striker deserves recognition for his performances, Abdülkerim remains the more suitable choice to captain the Turkish champions.
Osimhen has already gained leadership experience at international level, having captained Nigeria’s Super Eagles in two of their recent competitive fixtures, including matches against Uganda and Morocco during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The 2023 African Footballer of the Year was absent from Galatasaray’s opening pre-season friendly, where the Istanbul club recorded a convincing 5-1 victory over Ümraniyespor as preparations for the new season continued.
