Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal are the leading contenders for the 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or, with the winner set to be announced at Monday’s ceremony in London.
Bayern Munich striker Kane enters the event as the bookmakers’ favourite after a remarkable season in which he scored 73 goals for club and country, won major domestic honours in Germany and helped England reach the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
However, the England captain faces strong competition from Real Madrid forward Mbappé and Barcelona youngster Yamal, who enjoyed outstanding campaigns of their own.
According to Sky Sports, the race is expected to be one of the closest in recent history, with all three players presenting compelling arguments for the prestigious individual award.
Kane targets historic Ballon d’Or triumph
Kane is hoping to become the first Englishman to win the Ballon d’Or since former Liverpool striker Michael Owen claimed the award in 2001.
Victory would make the Bayern Munich forward only the fifth English player to win the honour, following Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Owen.
He would also become the first Bayern Munich player to win the award in 45 years.
The former Tottenham Hotspur striker has built a strong case through his goalscoring achievements and trophy-winning campaign. He scored 73 goals for club and country during the 2025/26 season, including 61 goals for Bayern Munich across all competitions.
His club tally was 19 goals higher than that of any other player in Europe’s five major leagues. It was also the highest single-season total by a player since Cristiano Ronaldo scored 61 goals for Real Madrid in the 2014/15 campaign.
Kane’s remarkable form earned him the European Golden Shoe for the second time, having previously won the award during his debut season at Bayern in 2023/24.
He also scored 12 goals for England, including six during the Three Lions’ run to the 2026 World Cup semi-finals, making him England’s all-time leading goalscorer at the tournament.
At club level, Kane helped Bayern win both the Bundesliga title and the German Cup. The German side also won their respective Super Cup, strengthening his claim to the award.
Bayern reached the Champions League semi-finals before suffering a thrilling 6-5 aggregate defeat to eventual champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Speaking to Sky Sports News after Bayern’s Champions League draw against Arsenal, Kane admitted that winning the Ballon d’Or would be a special achievement but insisted he was not getting carried away.
“It’d be incredible if I do. It’d be special for sure. I’d love to win it, but we will have to wait and see. A big night, but I’m not getting carried away,” he said.
Mbappé’s goalscoring record strengthens his case
Mbappé has emerged as Kane’s closest challenger after a late surge in the bookmakers’ rankings, overtaking Yamal as the second favourite.
Although the Real Madrid forward failed to win a trophy with either his club or France during the assessment period, his individual numbers remain impressive.
The French international scored 58 goals for club and country during the 2025/26 season. He also finished as LaLiga’s leading goalscorer with 25 goals and topped the Champions League scoring chart with 15 goals, one more than Kane.
Real Madrid’s Champions League campaign ended in the quarter-finals, but Mbappé’s performances in front of goal continued to demonstrate his status as one of the world’s most dangerous attackers.
He also enjoyed a productive World Cup, winning the Golden Boot with 10 goals. According to Sky Sports, that was the highest tally by a player in a single edition since Gerd Müller scored 10 for West Germany in 1970.
Mbappé, 27, also became the all-time leading goalscorer in World Cup history, taking his total to 22 goals.
His individual achievements provide a strong argument for his candidacy, although the absence of major trophies could prove a significant disadvantage when compared with Kane and Yamal.
Yamal hopes to make Ballon d’Or history
Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal is also firmly in contention and is aiming to become the youngest-ever winner of the Ballon d’Or at the age of 19.
The Spain international enjoyed another impressive season with Barcelona, helping the Catalan club win LaLiga and their Super Cup, although they missed out on the Copa del Rey.
Barcelona were eliminated from the Champions League in the quarter-finals, but Yamal’s performances continued to establish him as one of the most exciting young players in world football.
He scored 25 goals for club and country during the season and registered 20 assists, more than both Kane and Mbappé.
Mbappé recorded 13 assists, while Kane managed eight. Yamal’s combined total of 45 goal contributions was nevertheless below Kane’s 81 and Mbappé’s 71.
The teenager’s dribbling statistics were particularly impressive. He completed 265 dribbles across Europe’s top-five leagues during the 2025/26 season, while also recording the most dribbles at the World Cup with 58.
Yamal’s World Cup campaign, however, was affected by a hamstring injury he suffered in April while playing for Barcelona. The injury ruled him out for the remainder of the club season and raised doubts over his availability for the tournament.
He returned as a substitute in Spain’s goalless draw against Cape Verde on June 15, before making his first start six days later and scoring Spain’s opening goal in their victory over Saudi Arabia.
Despite the disruption, Yamal helped Spain win the World Cup. He scored once during the tournament, while his teammates Rodri and Pau Cubarsí received the player of the tournament and young player awards, respectively.
Yamal had previously expressed confidence in his Ballon d’Or credentials, telling The Guardian in September that he believed he had performed at a level worthy of winning the award for more than just the current year.
His age, creativity, dribbling ability and contribution to Barcelona’s domestic success could make him a serious challenger to Kane.
What the honours say about the race
The Ballon d’Or assessment period covered performances from August 3, 2025, to July 19, 2026.
During that period, Kane won the Bundesliga and German Cup with Bayern Munich, while Yamal helped Barcelona win LaLiga. Both players also won their respective Super Cups.
Mbappé, by contrast, did not win a trophy with Real Madrid or France during the period.
In European competition, Kane also went further than his two main rivals. Bayern reached the Champions League semi-finals, while Barcelona and Real Madrid both exited in the quarter-finals.
Internationally, however, Yamal enjoyed the ultimate success by helping Spain win the World Cup. Kane and England reached the semi-finals and subsequently secured the bronze medal by defeating Mbappé’s France in the third-place play-off.
The contrasting achievements make the race particularly interesting: Kane has the strongest overall goalscoring figures and a domestic double, Yamal has a league title and World Cup glory, while Mbappé boasts an outstanding individual scoring record at both club and international level.
What the pundits are saying
Several Sky Sports pundits have backed Kane to win the award, citing his goalscoring exploits, trophies and leadership for England.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes Kane deserves the honour because of his exceptional scoring record and Bayern’s domestic success.
“Kane should win the Ballon d’Or and the reason is because he’s scored 73 goals in a season and only Lionel Messi has scored more in a season,” Carragher said.
“He also won the double with Bayern Munich and was part of an England team that got to the World Cup semi-finals.”
Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson admitted that the decision was difficult because both Kane and Yamal had enjoyed outstanding campaigns. Nevertheless, he favoured the England captain.
“It’s such a hard one because Kane’s scored a million goals and has been phenomenal, but Lamine Yamal’s been phenomenal too and he’s won the World Cup,” Merson said.
He added that he hoped Kane would win because Yamal could collect the award several times in the future.
“So I’d just go with Kane, but I wouldn’t be shocked if it wasn’t him,” Merson concluded.
Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood also backed Kane, arguing that the striker’s ability to handle the pressure of playing for Bayern and continue scoring for England made him a deserving candidate.
“If he doesn’t win it now, then he never will,” Sherwood said.
Former England international Sue Smith also supported Kane, praising his goalscoring, movement, ability to operate in the number 10 role and consistency throughout the season.
Former Tottenham defender Michael Dawson similarly backed his former teammate but acknowledged that Yamal would be the player Kane needed to overcome.
Clinton Morrison also favoured Kane, highlighting his performances for Bayern and leadership of the England national team.
The strong support from the pundits reflects the belief that Kane’s combination of goals, trophies and international performances gives him a compelling case.
A third consecutive year with a first-time winner?
The 2026 ceremony could mark the third consecutive year that a new player wins the men’s Ballon d’Or, following a period dominated by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Kane, Mbappé and Yamal are all seeking their first victory in the award’s history, adding further significance to Monday’s event.
Kane’s potential triumph would end England’s 25-year wait for another winner and reward one of the most productive goalscoring seasons of his career.
For Mbappé, victory would recognise his extraordinary individual output despite a trophyless campaign. For Yamal, it would represent a historic achievement at just 19 years old.
