Nigeria’s Super Eagles have provided a positive update on the fitness situation of captain Wilfred Ndidi and defender Ryan Alebiosu as the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations continues.
Ndidi picked up a hamstring injury during Nigeria’s quarter-final clash against Algeria on Saturday, a game the Super Eagles won 2–0 to secure a place in the semi-finals of the tournament. The injury raised concerns within the Nigerian camp, given the midfielder’s importance to the team’s balance and defensive structure.
Despite the setback, Ndidi has already been ruled out of the Super Eagles’ semi-final encounter against hosts Morocco, but this is due to suspension rather than injury. The Leicester City midfielder had accumulated bookings earlier in the competition, making him unavailable for the last-four fixture regardless of his fitness status.
Encouragingly, the Super Eagles medical team believes Ndidi could still play a part later in the tournament. He is expected to be available for either the third-place playoff or the final, should Nigeria progress, depending on his recovery and match readiness.
Providing an update on the situation, team media officer Promise Efoghe revealed that the injury is not considered serious. According to Efoghe, Ndidi has already begun moving around freely without discomfort, a sign that the hamstring issue is responding well to treatment.
There was also positive news regarding Alebiosu, who has been working his way back to full fitness after a minor issue earlier in the tournament. Efoghe confirmed that the right-back continues to make steady progress and took part in the team’s training session on Sunday night.
The update will come as a boost to head coach and fans alike, as Nigeria look to maintain momentum and depth in their squad while pushing for a strong finish at the AFCON finals.
