Akwa United have made significant changes to their squad following the conclusion of the first phase of the 2025-26 Nigeria National League (NNL) season, releasing nine players ahead of the second stanza.
The Uyo-based club confirmed that Anietie Uko, Erikan Francis, Lazarus Ebuka, Itebu James and Joshua Unoro have all been shown the exit door. Also departing the Promise Keepers are Babatunde Omosebi, Onhanedo Onyedikachi, Emenike John and Emmanuel Ita, as the club reshapes its team in preparation for the crucial run-in.
Already, some of the affected players have secured new opportunities elsewhere. Anietie Uko has completed a move to Tanzanian side Mbeya Kwanza, while Erikan Francis has joined fellow NNL campaigners Heartland on a loan deal to gain more playing time.
Meanwhile, Akwa United’s management has moved swiftly to strengthen the squad, bringing in five new players to boost competition and depth across key positions. The new signings are expected to add fresh energy and balance to the team as they look to improve their performances in the second half of the season.
The changes are part of the club’s broader strategy to return to winning ways and mount a serious challenge for promotion to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL). With the second stanza of the NNL season scheduled to begin on February 14, 2026, Akwa United are hopeful that the revamped squad will deliver better results and put the club back on track in the promotion race.
