Manchester City continued their impressive run on Saturday, securing a 2-1 win against Newcastle United. The victory moves Pep Guardiola’s side within two points of league leaders Arsenal, setting the stage for an exciting conclusion to the season.
O’Reilly Double Decides The Contest
The standout performer of the night was Nico O’Reilly, whose two first-half goals proved to be enough for the home side. The academy graduate opened the scoring in the 14th minute, showing great composure to find the back of the net after being set up by a driving run from Omar Marmoush.
Newcastle found a way back into the match in the 22nd minute when Lewis Hall’s long-range effort took a deflection off Rayan Ait-Nouri and beat Gianluigi Donnarumma. However, the visitors were level for only five minutes. In the 27th minute, Erling Haaland turned provider, lofting a cross into the box for O’Reilly to head home his second of the game.
A Battle in the Rain
As the rain intensified at the Etihad, both teams struggled with the slick conditions. Newcastle pushed for an equalizer in the second half and thought they had scored through Dan Burn, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
The closing stages were tense, with Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope even joining the attack for a corner in stoppage time, but City’s defense held firm to maintain their lead.
The result extends Manchester City’s remarkable home record against Newcastle, marking their 17th consecutive Premier League win against the Magpies at the Etihad.
The focus now shifts to Sunday’s fixtures, where the competitive race at the top of the table continues. With very little separating the frontrunners, every point is proving vital in the quest for the trophy.
