Chelsea FC midfielder Enzo Fernández will sit out the club’s next two matches after making remarks about his future that were considered out of line by manager Liam Rosenior.
The 25-year-old Argentine, who joined Chelsea in January 2023 for a British record fee of £107 million, recently sparked speculation about his long-term commitment to the club following their exit from the UEFA Champions League.
Fernández openly suggested uncertainty about remaining at Stamford Bridge and later stated that he would like to live in Spain, comments that quickly drew attention and raised questions about a possible move away from England.
Reacting to the situation, Rosenior confirmed that the midfielder would be dropped for two key fixtures, including the FA Cup quarter-final clash against Port Vale and the Premier League encounter with Manchester City scheduled for April 12.
The Chelsea manager explained that while he has great respect for Fernández as a player, individual and professional, the comments crossed a line in terms of the standards and culture the club is trying to build.
Rosenior emphasized that the decision was not based solely on his authority, noting that the club’s leadership, including the ownership, sporting directors and players, were all in agreement on the need to take disciplinary action.
He further clarified that the sanction is not intended to permanently sideline the midfielder, but rather to reinforce internal discipline and protect the collective values of the team.
Despite the controversy, Rosenior acknowledged that Fernández remains an important figure within the squad, adding that his frustration likely stems from a strong desire to see Chelsea return to winning ways.
The development comes at a difficult period for the club, as Chelsea have struggled for consistency in recent weeks. The team endured a run of four consecutive defeats in March and were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League after suffering a heavy 8-2 aggregate loss to Paris Saint-Germain.
Fernández also missed Chelsea’s most recent outing due to the ongoing situation, but attention will now focus on how the team responds in his absence as they prepare for crucial fixtures in both domestic and cup competitions.
While the disciplinary measure highlights tensions within the squad, it also reflects the club’s effort to maintain unity and focus during a challenging stretch of the season.
