The 2026 edition of the National Para Games wrapped up on Friday at the velodrome of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, with Enugu State emerging as the overall winner.
Enugu dominated the competition, finishing with an impressive tally of 40 gold medals, alongside 8 silver and 7 bronze. Bayelsa State followed in second place, recording 25 gold, 30 silver, and 34 bronze medals, while Edo State secured third position with 25 gold, 14 silver, and 12 bronze.
Rivers and Lagos States rounded out the top five standings. Rivers claimed fourth place with 21 gold, 21 silver, and 17 bronze medals, while Lagos finished fifth with 20 gold, 23 silver, and 20 bronze.
The closing ceremony featured a vibrant display celebrating sportsmanship and unity, drawing the presence of several high-profile dignitaries. Among them was Nana Kashim-Shetima, wife of the Vice President, who represented the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu.
Other notable attendees included Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad; Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Abdullahi; and Fatima Abbas, wife of the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
In her remarks, the First Lady commended all participants for their determination and discipline, praising both medal winners and non-winners alike as champions. She reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting para-athletes and creating more opportunities for them to thrive.
Similarly, the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, reaffirmed the commission’s dedication to the growth and development of para-sports in Nigeria, noting that sports remain a key priority under the current administration.
