Former Gary Neville has singled out Declan Rice as the player he expects to step up when Arsenal take on Manchester City in a crucial Premier League showdown on Sunday.
Neville believes the high-stakes encounter at the Etihad Stadium could be defined by individual brilliance, suggesting that Rice may be the decisive figure capable of influencing the title race. The match comes with Arsenal sitting six points clear of City, although Guardiola’s side still have a game in hand that keeps the race finely balanced.
Speaking on The Overlap, Neville admitted he was disappointed when Rice left West Ham United for Arsenal in a £100 million deal, claiming he viewed him as a player who could have strengthened Manchester United instead.
Despite that, the former defender insisted his comments were not meant as pressure but rather an expectation that Rice could rise to the occasion in one of the biggest matches of the season.
“When he went to Arsenal for £100 million, I was gutted. I think he is a Manchester United player,” Neville said.
“To me, on Sunday, he is the player I am looking at. This is not me putting pressure on him, by the way. This is me expecting that this is the Roy Keane moment, the Gerrard moment.”
The remarks highlight the magnitude of the fixture, with both teams aware that the outcome could have a major impact on the Premier League title race. Manchester City remain in second place but continue to apply pressure on Arsenal as the season approaches its decisive stage.
Rice, who has been a key figure in Arsenal’s midfield since his arrival, is expected to play a central role in controlling the tempo and providing stability in what is likely to be a high-intensity contest.
As anticipation builds, attention will now turn to whether Arsenal’s midfield general can indeed deliver the type of defining performance Neville alluded to, in a match that could shape the destiny of the league title.
