Eric Chelle has revealed plans to widen his search for talent ahead of the 2026 Unity Cup, confirming he will look across Europe and within Nigeria for new players to strengthen the Super Eagles.
The Unity Cup is scheduled to take place in May at The Valley, home of Charlton Athletic, and will serve as an opportunity for the coaching crew to assess fresh options. Following a demanding season for many regular starters, Chelle is expected to rest several key players, opening the door for new faces to stake their claim.
Nigeria will begin their campaign against Zimbabwe national football team on May 26. Should they progress, they could face either Jamaica national football team or India national football team in the final.
Speaking in a press statement, Chelle emphasized that the tournament will play a key role in expanding the national team pool and identifying players capable of contributing in future competitions.
“The Unity Cup offers an opportunity to evaluate new players. I will search Europe and invite new talents of Nigerian descent, along with those who were previously called up but did not get the opportunity to play,” Chelle said.
He also highlighted his intention to keep a close watch on the domestic scene, stressing that standout performers in the Nigeria Premier Football League will not be overlooked.
“Prominent players from the Nigeria Premier Football League will also be taken into account, as I will be observing several domestic league matches from now until the season concludes,” he added.
Beyond scouting new players abroad and locally, Chelle noted that he will revisit previously invited players who are yet to make their debut or have had limited chances to impress. This approach signals a broader evaluation strategy aimed at building depth and competition within the squad.
In the previous edition of the Unity Cup, Chelle handed debuts to a number of players, including Benjamin Fredrick, Igoh Ogbu, Felix Agu, Christantus Uche, Papa Daniel, Alimi Sikiru, Chinemerem Ugwueze, and Ifeanyi Onyebuchi, underlining his willingness to experiment and develop new talent.
With preparations underway, the Unity Cup is shaping up to be a crucial platform for Chelle to reshape the squad, test emerging players, and lay the groundwork for future international competitions.
