Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry has raised concerns about Arsenal’s tactical weaknesses ahead of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg against Sporting CP on Wednesday night.
Arsenal head into the tie under pressure after a disappointing 2–1 defeat to AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League at the Emirates Stadium, a result that has intensified scrutiny on their build-up play under pressure.
Speaking on CBS Sports, Henry pointed to a recurring issue Arsenal have faced when opponents apply aggressive pressing systems, particularly formations resembling a 4-2-4 shape designed to disrupt their passing structure from the back.
He suggested that teams who study Arsenal closely may find opportunities to exploit this weakness, especially if they replicate the pressing intensity shown by Manchester City and Bournemouth in recent matches.
“If you’re Sporting, and you look at how Manchester City pressed Arsenal, and then how Bournemouth did it at the weekend with that early 4-2-4 pressure, Arsenal had no answer for how to escape it,” Henry said.
The Frenchman warned that this could become a decisive factor in the upcoming European fixture if Sporting CP adopt a similar approach, stressing that Arsenal must quickly find solutions to cope with high-intensity pressing if they want to progress in the competition.
Henry also emphasized the importance of the match beyond just qualification, noting that Arsenal need a strong performance not only to advance in the Champions League but also to build confidence for upcoming high-profile fixtures.
“I don’t know what Sporting are going to do, but yes, it is very important for Arsenal to win and make sure they can prepare for the game we are all waiting for,” he added.
With expectations high and pressure mounting, Arsenal now face a critical test of their tactical flexibility and mental resilience as they look to secure a place in the semi-finals.
