Victor Boniface is facing growing uncertainty over his role at Werder Bremen after head coach Daniel Thioune once again raised concerns about his fitness and ability to fit into the team’s tactical system.
The Nigerian striker, who is currently on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, has endured a frustrating season marked by injuries, including a knee issue that kept him out of action for an extended period. Although he has recently returned to the matchday squad, he has yet to feature again competitively and remained an unused substitute in Bremen’s 1-1 draw with VfB Stuttgart.
Thioune has been open about the situation, explaining that Boniface is still not at the level required for Bremen’s high-intensity style of play. According to the coach, the team demands forwards who can consistently press, move with intensity, and maintain sharp physical condition throughout matches. He admitted that discussions have already taken place with the player regarding his fitness, and that a clear gap still exists between Boniface’s current condition and what the team needs.
Despite that, Thioune stressed that the decision is not purely short-term. He noted that the club is also thinking about long-term development and squad balance, even if it means difficult choices in the present. He also acknowledged Boniface’s professionalism and commitment since returning, but made it clear that fitness remains the deciding factor.
Tactically, Bremen are currently leaning towards strikers who are more physically dominant in the box and capable of sustaining high work-rate levels. This shift has made competition for attacking places even tougher, with other forwards stepping up and taking advantage of their opportunities.
One of those players, Musah, has impressed in recent appearances, bringing energy and aggression to the attack, further complicating Boniface’s path back into the starting lineup.
The Nigerian forward has not played a competitive match since December, and with the season nearing its conclusion, his chances of regular minutes are becoming increasingly limited. His loan spell is also approaching its end, adding further uncertainty over whether he will remain part of Bremen’s plans moving forward.
For now, Boniface must rely on training performances to prove his readiness and convince the coaching staff that he can still play a meaningful role as Bremen continue their fight to secure Bundesliga safety.
