Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho capped off an impressive afternoon by getting on the scoresheet as Celtic defeated Dunfermline Athletic 3-1 to lift the Scottish Cup at Hampden Park on Saturday.
The Nigerian forward came off the bench to seal victory for the Hoops in a dominant display that underlined Celtic’s superiority from start to finish. Iheanacho’s strike not only wrapped up the win but also crowned a strong personal campaign for the former Leicester City attacker.
Celtic began the final with intensity and confidence, taking control of possession from the opening whistle. Their early pressure paid off in the 17th minute when Japanese winger Daizen Maeda broke the deadlock with a composed finish that sent the Celtic supporters into celebration.
The Hoops continued to dictate the pace of the match, pinning Dunfermline deep inside their own half and creating several dangerous opportunities. Despite their dominance, the second goal did not arrive until nine minutes before halftime, when Arne Engels calmly doubled Celtic’s advantage after another flowing attacking move.
Manager Brendan Rodgers introduced Iheanacho shortly before the hour mark, replacing veteran winger James Forrest as Celtic looked to maintain their attacking threat in the second half.
The Nigerian international made an immediate impact with his movement, pressing and link-up play causing problems for the Dunfermline defence. His moment finally arrived late in the game when he clinically finished off a move to score Celtic’s third goal and put the result beyond doubt.
Although Josh Cooper pulled one back for Dunfermline in the 80th minute, the goal proved to be nothing more than consolation as Celtic comfortably saw out the remainder of the contest to secure yet another domestic trophy.
Iheanacho’s goal added further shine to an encouraging season in Scotland, with the striker ending the campaign with nine goals in 24 appearances across all competitions for Celtic.
The victory also reinforces Celtic’s dominance in Scottish football, with the club once again ending the season with silverware. For Iheanacho, the cup triumph could serve as another important boost ahead of upcoming international assignments with Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
After difficult periods earlier in his career, the former Manchester City forward appears to have rediscovered confidence and rhythm in Glasgow, and his contribution in the final will only strengthen his growing importance within Celtic’s squad.
