Manchester United legend Patrice Evra has reignited his long-running criticism of Arsenal after the Gunners suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the UEFA Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain.
Arsenal came agonisingly close to European glory but ultimately fell short in a dramatic encounter that ended in a 4-3 penalty shootout loss, leaving Mikel Arteta’s side devastated after what had been a strong run to the final.
The match itself was tightly contested and filled with key moments. Arsenal initially took the lead through Kai Havertz, raising hopes among their supporters that a long-awaited Champions League triumph was within reach. However, Paris Saint-Germain responded through Ousmane Dembélé, who calmly converted from the penalty spot to bring the French champions level.
With neither side able to find a winner in normal time, the final was decided from the penalty spot — where PSG held their nerve while Arsenal faltered at crucial moments. David Raya produced a save to deny Nuno Mendes, giving Arsenal a brief lifeline, but misses from Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Magalhães ultimately proved costly as the French side sealed back-to-back Champions League titles.
Following the defeat, Evra wasted no time in targeting the North London club with a provocative social media post. The former Manchester United defender shared a video featuring the Champions League trophy, soundtracked by MC Hammer’s iconic hit “U Can’t Touch This,” in a clear dig at Arsenal’s continued struggle to win Europe’s biggest prize.
He went further in his comments, suggesting that despite domestic progress, Arsenal would not be lifting the Champions League trophy anytime soon.
“Arsenal might win the Premier League, but they won’t win the Champions League for the next 50 years,” Evra implied, continuing his long history of teasing the club.
The Frenchman’s remarks are not new. Evra has repeatedly taken playful shots at Arsenal over the years, especially after major European setbacks. Following their semi-final exit last season against PSG, he also posted a video mocking the Gunners while maintaining that his comments were made in jest.
In that earlier reaction, Evra insisted he still holds respect for Arsenal and manager Mikel Arteta, describing his comments as light-hearted banter rather than genuine hostility.
“I feel sorry for Arsenal, people are too harsh on them,” he said at the time. “I like Arteta, he is a good friend. The problem is not the players, it’s more the expectations around the club.”
Despite the humour in his criticism, Evra’s remarks often spark strong reactions from Arsenal fans, particularly given his history with Manchester United during one of the Premier League’s fiercest rivalries.
Throughout his career, Evra faced Arsenal 21 times while playing for United, winning 13 of those encounters and losing just four. He also recorded a goal and an assist against the Gunners, further cementing his reputation as one of their most vocal opponents from that era.
Arsenal, meanwhile, will be left to reflect on another missed opportunity at European glory after coming so close to ending their long wait for a Champions League title.
For Evra, however, the moment was another chance to stir the debate and once again, Arsenal found themselves on the receiving end of his trademark sarcasm and playful mockery.
