Super Falcons midfielder Toni Payne has expressed her joy after finally scoring her first goal for Nigeria in the team’s hard-fought 2-1 victory over Senegal in an international friendly.
The Everton star found the back of the net during Friday night’s encounter at the Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne, helping the nine-time African champions secure a morale-boosting win.
Nigeria took the lead in the 32nd minute when captain Asisat Oshoala calmly converted a penalty to put the hosts ahead. Payne then doubled the advantage moments before halftime, finishing brilliantly to give the Super Falcons a comfortable cushion going into the break.
Although Senegal pulled a goal back in the second half, Nigeria held on to claim the victory in front of their home supporters.
For Payne, the goal carried special significance as it ended a long wait for her first strike in Nigerian colours. The midfielder, who has been a regular member of the national team for several years, admitted she was thrilled to finally get her name on the scoresheet.
Speaking after the match, Payne said she was delighted to break her goal drought and described the moment as particularly memorable because it happened on home soil.
The 31-year-old has been a consistent performer for the Super Falcons since switching her international allegiance from the United States, where she represented various youth teams before opting to play for Nigeria at senior level.
Despite making 46 appearances for the Super Falcons prior to the Senegal clash, Payne had never managed to score for the team. Her breakthrough goal was therefore a personal milestone and one she celebrated with visible excitement.
The midfielder’s performance was also a boost for head coach Justine Madugu, who continues to build his squad ahead of future international competitions. Payne’s experience, creativity, and work rate have made her an important member of the team, and her first international goal could provide an added layer of confidence moving forward.
With the Super Falcons securing victory and Payne ending her lengthy wait for a goal, the friendly served as a positive outing for both player and country as preparations continue for upcoming challenges on the international stage.
