Germany’s search for a new direction has begun swiftly following another disappointing FIFA World Cup campaign, with the German Football Federation confirming it will open talks with Jürgen Klopp over the vacant national team job.
The move follows the departure of Julian Nagelsmann, whose tenure came to an abrupt end after Germany’s Round of 16 elimination at the 2026 World Cup. The four-time world champions were knocked out on penalties by Paraguay, extending a worrying trend that has seen one of international football’s traditional powerhouses repeatedly fall short on the biggest stage.
The latest setback carries added significance given Germany’s recent World Cup record. After suffering consecutive group-stage exits in Russia in 2018 and Qatar in 2022, hopes were high that Nagelsmann would oversee a return to contention. Instead, another early elimination has prompted the German Football Federation to begin planning for a new era.
In a statement released on Friday, the federation confirmed that discussions with Klopp are now expected to take place after the former Liverpool manager indicated his willingness to take charge of the national team.
“The DFB leadership will now seek talks with Jürgen Klopp. He has already signaled his willingness to take on the position,” the federation said.
Klopp has remained away from frontline coaching since leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 season, bringing to an end a hugely successful nine-year spell at Anfield that delivered the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. Since stepping away from club management, the 59-year-old has served as Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer, overseeing the company’s multi-club football operations.
A return to the dugout with Germany would represent one of the most anticipated appointments in international football. Klopp has long been viewed as a natural successor to lead the national team, having established himself as one of the game’s most influential coaches through successful spells with Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool.
For Germany, the appointment would also signal a renewed attempt to restore the identity that once made the Mannschaft one of the world’s most feared international sides. Consecutive World Cup disappointments have raised serious questions about the team’s direction, and the federation now appears ready to entrust Klopp with rebuilding confidence ahead of the next cycle of major tournaments.
While formal negotiations are still to take place, the public confirmation of Klopp’s willingness to accept the role suggests Germany could soon usher in a new chapter, one built around a manager whose energy, tactical clarity and ability to unite dressing rooms have defined his coaching career.
