FIFA has demanded an explanation from Nigerian football authorities over reports alleging government interference in the affairs of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF.

The world football governing body sent a letter to the Nigerian authorities on Tuesday, September 1, signed by FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström.

FIFA said it had taken note of reports that NFF president Ibrahim Gusau resigned following an alleged directive from the Presidency.

The development has raised concerns within FIFA because its statutes require national football associations to operate independently and without interference from governments or other external bodies.

FIFA specifically referenced Articles 14 and 19 of its statutes, which require member associations to manage their affairs independently and ensure that their activities are not subject to undue influence from third parties.

“FIFA has taken note with great concern of reports indicating that the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Mr Ibrahim Gusau, has tendered his resignation following a directive from the Presidency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the letter stated.

FIFA has asked Nigerian authorities to provide written confirmation that Gusau’s reported resignation was voluntary and made without external pressure.

The organisation has also requested an official explanation from the Federal Government regarding the circumstances surrounding the reported resignation.

Beyond the immediate issue, FIFA wants assurances that the NFF will continue to operate in accordance with its statutes and the regulations governing its membership of the global football body.

The intervention places Nigerian football under renewed scrutiny, with FIFA’s position making clear that any attempt by government authorities to influence the independent administration of the NFF could have serious consequences.

The Nigerian authorities will now be expected to respond to FIFA’s concerns and clarify the circumstances surrounding Gusau’s reported resignation.
