The first Manchester derby of the 2026-27 Premier League season comes to Old Trafford with both sides carrying contrasting storylines into one of English football’s biggest fixtures. Manchester City have made a perfect start to their league campaign, winning all three of their opening matches before adding a 2-0 Champions League victory over Porto in midweek. Manchester United, meanwhile, have already experienced a more turbulent beginning, losing to Hull City, beating Ipswich Town and then conceding a late equaliser against Everton. They responded emphatically in Europe, however, defeating Champions League debutants Sabah 4-0 at Old Trafford. Now, with Enzo Maresca preparing for his first Manchester derby as City manager, Michael Carrick has the opportunity to repeat his earlier success against United’s neighbours.
The Opta supercomputer gives City the advantage, but it is not a commanding one. Manchester City have been given a 44.2 per cent probability of winning, compared with 31.6 per cent for Manchester United, while the model gives the draw a 24.2 per cent chance. That relatively narrow gap reflects the uncertainty surrounding a United side that has shown considerable attacking promise but remains vulnerable defensively. City’s perfect league record makes them the statistical favourites, yet United’s home form under Carrick and their recent record in the derby mean this is unlikely to be straightforward for the visitors.
United’s attacking numbers have been one of the most encouraging aspects of their opening three league matches. They have attempted 68 shots, the most of any Premier League side, while their 7.3 expected goals is also the highest total in the division. Their 19 shots on target have been matched only by City. Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes have all already found the net in the Premier League, giving Carrick several sources of attacking threat. The problem has come at the opposite end of the pitch. United have conceded twice in each of their first three league games of the campaign. They have only previously begun three league seasons by conceding multiple goals in four consecutive matches in 1926-27, when they shipped at least two in their first five, 1930-31, when the run stretched to 12, and 1969-70, when it lasted four matches.
That defensive uncertainty has not stopped Old Trafford from becoming a productive venue for Carrick since his return for a second spell in charge in January. United have won nine of their last 10 home Premier League matches, losing only once, and they have scored at least twice in each of those nine victories. Their last three home wins have all come despite conceding twice, meaning supporters have been given plenty of entertainment even if the clean sheets have been harder to find. Carrick’s first Premier League match after returning to the United dugout was also against City, and goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu secured a morale-boosting 2-0 victory.
Another victory over City would give Carrick a place in United history. He could become only the third Manchester United manager to win his first two league matches against Manchester City. The only managers to achieve the feat previously were A.H. Albut in 1895 and John Bentley in 1913. Carrick therefore has the chance to join a very small group of United managers while simultaneously handing his team an early psychological advantage in the 2026-27 title race.
City arrive at Old Trafford with their own opportunity to create history. Victory would give them four wins from their opening four Premier League matches for the seventh time, which would be an outright record for any club. There is, however, a warning hidden inside that statistic. City have won the Premier League title in only two of the previous six seasons in which they began with four consecutive victories, doing so in 2011-12 and 2023-24. A perfect start, therefore, has not always proved to be a guarantee of eventual success.
Maresca’s team were less convincing in their most recent Premier League fixture, edging Coventry City 1-0 on matchday three, but they produced a much stronger performance in Europe during the week. City defeated Porto 2-0 in their Champions League opener, giving them three Premier League victories and a European win from their first four competitive matches. Erling Haaland was on target against Coventry before producing another statement performance against Porto, scoring twice.
Haaland’s record against United makes him one of the obvious focal points of the derby. The Norwegian has scored eight goals in seven Premier League appearances against the Red Devils, including a hat-trick in his first meeting with them in 2022. Only Mohamed Salah, with 13 goals, and Alan Shearer, with 10, have scored more Premier League goals against United. Haaland has scored only twice against United at Old Trafford, but City’s record when he gets on the scoresheet is perfect: they have never failed to beat their neighbours when the Norwegian has scored.
United will hope Marcus Rashford can provide a different kind of derby story. Rashford has scored in each of his last two Premier League appearances against City, doing so for United in March 2024 and Aston Villa in April 2025. Those two goals are as many as he managed across his previous nine meetings with City. The forward has scored six times for United against their neighbours, although he has found the net more often against Leicester City, with eight goals, and Liverpool, with seven.
Sunday’s match could also give Rashford another notable statistical milestone. He has played in 22 Manchester derbies, and another appearance would make City the opponent he has faced most often outright as a United player, moving them level with West Ham on 22 meetings. His record of six goals against City also leaves them below Leicester and Liverpool among his most productive opponents.
There is another landmark potentially awaiting United’s team sheet. Luke Shaw is one appearance away from making his 300th appearance for Manchester United. The left-back did not feature in Thursday’s Champions League win over Sabah, with Carrick explaining that the decision was related to managing his minutes after Shaw suffered cramp against Everton. Shaw has nevertheless been a constant presence in the Premier League, starting 41 consecutive matches. The last United outfielder to put together a longer run was Harry Maguire, who started 72 successive Premier League games between August 2019 and May 2021.
The recent head-to-head record provides both sides with reasons for confidence and concern. United won this exact fixture 2-0 last season, but they have not managed successive home Premier League victories over City since the Alex Ferguson era. United won three consecutive home league derbies between the 2008-09 and 2010-11 seasons, but that run remains their most recent example of sustained dominance at Old Trafford.
City have also struggled to establish control over the recent rivalry. They have won only one of their last four Premier League matches against United, drawing one and losing two. That represents a significant reversal from the previous six meetings, in which City won five and lost only once. United’s recent improvement in the fixture means Maresca cannot simply rely on City’s stronger start to the season.
Maresca’s personal record against United is similarly mixed. During his time as Chelsea manager, his side played the Red Devils three times, winning once, drawing once and losing once. His only victory came at Stamford Bridge. This will therefore be his first opportunity to beat United away from home as Manchester City manager and his first experience of the derby from the City dugout.
The precedent set by City’s recent managers is encouraging for Maresca. Pep Guardiola and Manuel Pellegrini both won their first Premier League Manchester derbies as City boss. Across the previous nine City managers, however, only two others — Sven-Goran Eriksson and Kevin Keegan — managed to win their first league derby against United. Maresca therefore has the opportunity to join an exclusive group of City managers who have begun their derby tenure with victory.
The predicted line-ups underline the attacking quality available to both managers. United are expected to start Senne Lammens in goal, with Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martínez and Luke Shaw forming the defence. Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans are predicted to operate in midfield, with Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo, Marcus Rashford and Matheus Cunha making up the attacking unit. Carrick will be looking to that group to exploit City’s defensive weaknesses while avoiding the mistakes that have contributed to United’s high concession rate.
City are predicted to line up with Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal and a defence of Abdukodir Khusanov, Rúben Dias, Marc Guéhi and Josko Gvardiol. Elliot Anderson and Enzo Fernández are expected to provide the midfield platform, while Rayan Cherki, Antoine Semenyo, Iliman Ndiaye and Haaland form a dangerous attacking quartet. Haaland’s current scoring form, combined with the creativity around him, gives City a particularly potent threat against a United defence that has conceded six goals across its first three league games.
The Opta Power Rankings provide another statistical lens on the contest. The system rates more than 13,000 domestic football teams around the world on a scale from zero to 100, with higher scores representing stronger teams. Ahead of the derby, the rankings offer an additional measure of the relative strength of the two Manchester clubs and form part of the wider statistical picture surrounding Sunday’s match.
Ultimately, the numbers point towards a close but slightly City-favoured derby. The Opta supercomputer gives Manchester City a 44.2 per cent chance of victory, United 31.6 per cent and the draw 24.2 per cent. City’s perfect Premier League start, Haaland’s exceptional record against United and their stronger defensive numbers explain their position as favourites. Yet United have the advantage of Old Trafford, a strong home record under Carrick and the confidence of beating City 2-0 in this fixture last season.
For United, the central question is whether their attack can continue producing at the rate suggested by their 68 shots and 7.3 xG while tightening a defence that has conceded twice in every league game. For City, it is about maintaining their early momentum against a rival that has recently made this fixture considerably more competitive. With Carrick chasing a piece of United history, Maresca seeking a winning start to his derby career, Haaland chasing another goal against his favourite opponents and Shaw potentially reaching 300 appearances, this Manchester derby has no shortage of individual and statistical storylines.
