Fenerbahçe forward Vedat Muriqi has warned Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen ahead of the highly anticipated Turkish Süper Lig derby against Galatasaray, insisting that his team’s defensive line has the quality to contain the Super Eagles star.
The two Turkish giants are scheduled to meet on Monday at Rams Park, Galatasaray’s home ground, in a fiercely contested encounter that is expected to attract significant attention from football fans.
Speaking ahead of the derby, Muriqi acknowledged Osimhen’s quality but expressed confidence that Fenerbahçe’s defenders would be able to limit the Nigerian international’s impact and prevent him from dominating the match.
“He’s a very strong and good player, but I trust my teammates,” Muriqi told beIN Sports, according to Turk Inform.
“I think our defensive line can neutralise Osimhen’s quickness and gain the upper hand.”
Muriqi’s comments come as Osimhen prepares for another meeting with one of Galatasaray’s biggest domestic rivals. The Nigerian striker has established an impressive record against Fenerbahçe since joining Galatasaray, remaining unbeaten in five official encounters against the Yellow-Navy Blues, according to the report.
Across four league meetings, Osimhen has recorded two victories and two draws, scoring once. His performances against Fenerbahçe have also demonstrated his ability to create problems for opposing defences in high-pressure fixtures.
One of his most memorable performances came during the 2024–25 season, when he scored twice in the Türkiye Cup quarter-final against Fenerbahçe to help Galatasaray secure a 2–1 victory.
That display underlined his importance to Galatasaray and showed why Fenerbahçe will need to remain organised defensively if they hope to prevent him from influencing Monday’s encounter.
Despite recognising Osimhen’s abilities, Muriqi believes Fenerbahçe can neutralise the striker through disciplined defending, teamwork and an effective approach to limiting his pace and movement in the attacking third.
The challenge will be particularly important because Osimhen’s speed, physical strength and ability to exploit spaces behind defenders make him a constant threat in front of goal. Fenerbahçe will therefore be expected to pay close attention to his movements and reduce the opportunities available to him.
However, Osimhen enters the derby after failing to score in his previous two Turkish Süper Lig appearances. Galatasaray won those matches against Kasımpaşa and Gençlerbirliği, although the Nigerian forward did not find the net.
He subsequently ended that scoring drought by registering a goal against his former club, Lille, in the UEFA Champions League.
That goal could provide a timely boost to his confidence ahead of the encounter with Fenerbahçe, as he looks to carry his European form into the domestic league.
For Galatasaray, Osimhen’s ability to deliver in major matches could prove decisive as they seek to strengthen their position in the Turkish top flight. His record against Fenerbahçe will also offer encouragement as he prepares for another demanding test.
Fenerbahçe, meanwhile, will hope that Muriqi’s confidence in his teammates translates into a strong defensive performance. The forward’s warning has set the stage for an intriguing battle between Osimhen’s attacking threat and Fenerbahçe’s determination to keep him quiet.
With both sides eager to establish superiority in one of Turkish football’s fiercest rivalries, Monday’s derby promises to be a significant test for Osimhen and the Fenerbahçe defence.
