Nottingham Forest forward Taiwo Awoniyi is now recuperating at home after emerging from an induced coma following surgery on a severe abdominal injury picked up in Sunday’s dramatic 2-2 draw with Leicester City.
The 26-year-old was rushed to the hospital after a violent collision with the goalpost late in the game. Medical scans revealed a ruptured intestine, prompting immediate surgical intervention.
Doctors carried out the first phase of a two-part operation on Monday. Due to the seriousness of the injury, Awoniyi was placed in a medically induced coma on Tuesday to stabilize his condition. The second surgical procedure took place on Wednesday, and he was successfully brought out of the coma later that evening.
However, the club is now facing internal scrutiny over the handling of the situation. Nottingham Forest is launching a formal investigation to understand why Awoniyi remained on the field after the initial injury, despite requiring extended treatment during the match.
Owner Evangelos Marinakis was visibly angered by the incident and confronted manager Nuno Espirito Santo post-match. A club spokesperson confirmed growing dissatisfaction with how the medical team handled the situation, stressing that Awoniyi should have been immediately withdrawn from the game.
The review will seek to determine the timeline of decisions made by the staff and whether protocol was correctly followed.
