Ex-Valencia star Gaizka Mendieta has suggested that Como boss Cesc Fabregas could one day succeed Mikel Arteta as Arsenal’s head coach.
Arteta, who took charge of the Gunners in 2019, has guided the North London club to an FA Cup and two Community Shield titles while also transforming them into consistent Premier League contenders. His side has finished as runners-up in each of the last three seasons, narrowly missing out on the title to Manchester City and Liverpool.
Speaking to OLBG, Mendieta said he believes Arteta’s success will eventually attract major offers from Europe’s elite clubs, particularly Barcelona.
“When Arteta decides it’s time for a new challenge, there will be no shortage of big clubs wanting him, Barcelona among them,” Mendieta said. “He’s proven himself, and opportunities will definitely come.”
Turning his attention to Fabregas, Mendieta praised the Spaniard’s progress at Como and hinted that Arsenal or Chelsea could come calling in the future.
“I’m sure there’s already been interest in Cesc,” he continued. “He’s happy in Italy because he’s shaping the project himself, deciding transfers, building the culture, and setting the tone. But I believe we’ll see him managing in the Premier League soon.”
Asked whether Fabregas would fit better at Arsenal or Chelsea, Mendieta replied: “Honestly, both. He’s a smart coach, tactically flexible, and quick to adapt. At Como, he’s already shown he can switch systems mid-game.
“If he ever joins Arsenal, he’ll get the freedom to build his own team, and stylistically, Arsenal’s football suits him perfectly right now.”
