Diego Simeone has offered an encouraging update on Ademola Lookman after the forward suffered a minor injury during the Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad.
Lookman was forced off in the second half after picking up an abductor muscle problem, despite having earlier opened the scoring for Atletico Madrid. He was replaced in the 63rd minute by Nicolás González.
Speaking ahead of Atlético Madrid’s next fixture against Elche, Simeone confirmed that the injury is not considered serious and that the player’s recovery is being closely monitored by the medical team.
“Well, we’ll see how Sorloth and Lookman recover from this minor injury they’ve had,” Simeone said, adding that there is optimism within the club that both players could return quickly.
He further suggested that Lookman could even be available for selection when Atlético Madrid face Athletic Bilbao on Saturday, depending on how his recovery progresses over the coming days.
“Hopefully they’ll be fully recovered for Saturday, which is possible, according to the doctors,” he added.
Lookman’s potential return would be a significant boost for Atlético Madrid as they prepare for a crucial period in their season, with a UEFA Champions League semi-final tie against Arsenal FC on the horizon.
Since joining Atlético Madrid during the winter transfer window from Atalanta, Lookman has quickly become an important player for the squad, contributing both goals and attacking creativity.
With the Champions League now seen as Atlético Madrid’s main chance of silverware this season, Simeone will be hopeful that the Nigerian forward recovers in time to play a key role in the decisive stages of the campaign.
