Lamine Yamal has named Lionel Messi as the greatest footballer in history, praising the Argentine icon’s achievements and global influence on the game.
The FC Barcelona winger made the declaration after receiving the Best Young Athlete award at the Laureus World Sports Awards held in Madrid.
Speaking after the ceremony, Yamal said: “Leo Messi is the best football player of all time. If he’s not the best athlete of all time, he’s certainly among them. Everyone respects him for what he’s achieved, and I hope I can follow in his footsteps.”
Messi, who currently plays for Inter Miami CF, is widely regarded as one of the most successful players in football history. Over the course of his career, the Argentine forward has won more than 45 trophies, including the FIFA World Cup with Argentina.
Now 38, Messi is nearing the final phase of his career, with expectations that the next World Cup could be his last appearance on football’s biggest stage.
Yamal’s comments add to the growing admiration from the next generation of footballers, many of whom see Messi as the benchmark for greatness. The young Spanish star, who has already made a significant impact at Barcelona, expressed his ambition to emulate the legacy built by the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.
His statement also highlights Messi’s enduring influence across generations, as emerging talents continue to draw inspiration from his consistency, skill, and achievements at the highest level of the sport.
