Nigeria’s Super Eagles have officially learned their opponents for the qualification race to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations after Tuesday’s draw ceremony held in Cairo, Egypt.
The three-time African champions were drawn in the same qualification group as Madagascar, Tanzania, and Guinea-Bissau in what many observers consider a favourable pathway toward securing a place at the continental tournament.
The draw took place at the headquarters of the Egyptian Football Association (EFA), where representatives from several African football nations gathered to discover their routes to the next edition of the competition.
Nigeria entered the draw as one of the seeded nations following the team’s strong standing in African football. Éric Chelle’s side was placed among some of the continent’s biggest football powers, reflecting the country’s pedigree and historical success in the tournament.
With the quality available in the current Super Eagles squad, many football analysts expect Nigeria to emerge as favourites to finish at the top of the group. However, the team is still expected to approach the qualification campaign with caution, especially given the steady improvement of several African national teams in recent years.
Madagascar, Tanzania, and Guinea-Bissau have all shown their ability to compete on the continental stage over the past few tournaments. Guinea-Bissau, in particular, have become regular participants at AFCON competitions, while Tanzania and Madagascar continue to build competitive squads capable of causing surprises.
According to the qualification format, the top two teams from the group will earn automatic qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations finals.
The qualification campaign will be played across three FIFA international windows stretching from September 2026 to March 2027.
The opening round of fixtures, covering matchdays one and two, is scheduled to take place between September 21 and October 6, 2026. Matchdays three and four will follow during the November FIFA window between November 9 and November 17.
The final round of qualification matches is expected to be played from March 22 to March 30, 2027, when the remaining qualification spots for the tournament will be decided.
For head coach Éric Chelle, the qualifiers will provide another important opportunity to continue building his squad and establish a stronger tactical identity within the national team setup.
Supporters will also be hoping the Super Eagles can deliver convincing performances throughout the campaign as the country aims to challenge seriously for continental honours once again.
Nigeria remains one of Africa’s most successful football nations, and expectations will be high for the team to progress comfortably from the group and secure another AFCON appearance.
