Former Arsenal goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has opened up on the emotional reasons behind his decision to switch international allegiance from England to Nigeria, revealing that his dream is to help the Super Eagles win major trophies.
The young goalkeeper, who recently received his first invitation to the Nigerian national team setup, spoke about the excitement, pride and personal significance of finally getting the opportunity to represent the country of his roots.
In a conversation with the Super Eagles media team, Okonkwo admitted that becoming eligible to play for Nigeria is a moment he has been waiting for over a long period of time.
According to him, the possibility of representing the Super Eagles first became serious last summer after initial conversations with members of the Nigerian coaching staff.
“It is a privilege to be granted the chance to play for your country,” Okonkwo said.
“I am extremely excited and eagerly await the opportunity. I have been looking forward to this moment for quite some time, and to finally have the chance is remarkable.”
The goalkeeper revealed that discussions between himself and the Nigerian national team management began months ago, with both the head coach and goalkeeping coach making their interest in him very clear from the beginning.
“The process began last summer when I spoke with the manager and the goalkeeping coach,” he explained.
“They expressed their interest in me, and the discussions were very encouraging. Since then, we have been working to finalize my switch from England to Nigeria.”
Okonkwo previously represented England at youth level, making his eventual switch to Nigeria an important moment both personally and professionally.
The former Arsenal shot stopper also described the emotional reaction he experienced when he finally received confirmation that he had been selected for the Super Eagles camp.
According to him, the national team’s goalkeeping coach was the first person to contact him with the news.
“When the moment finally came, the goalkeeping coach was the first to message me, letting me know that I had been selected for the camp,” he said.
“You experience a surge of excitement. The first two people I called were my dad and my mom.”
The goalkeeper added that his family’s reaction means a great deal to him and admitted he still plans to share the news with other relatives who are expected to be equally thrilled.
“I am filled with happiness and pride,” Okonkwo continued.
“I have not yet informed the rest of my family, but they will soon find out, and I am certain they will be thrilled.”
Beyond the emotional side of the decision, Okonkwo made it clear that ambition also played a huge role in choosing Nigeria over England.
The goalkeeper explained that his desire to compete for trophies and contribute to Nigerian football was central to his final decision.
“The reason for my decision is that I aspire to win trophies for my country,” he said.
“I understand how much Nigerians cherish football and how significant it is to them, and being able to contribute to that for my country and my roots would be extraordinary.”
Okonkwo’s arrival comes at a time when the Super Eagles are continuing to rebuild under new management while also expanding competition within the squad.
Nigeria has increasingly targeted dual nationality players across Europe in recent years, and Okonkwo’s decision is being viewed as another major addition to the national team’s long term future.
The goalkeeper, who previously spent time with Arsenal before continuing his development elsewhere, is already attracting attention for his performances at club level and could now become part of Nigeria’s next generation between the posts.
His invitation also adds further competition to the Super Eagles goalkeeping department as the team prepares for upcoming international competitions and qualification campaigns.
For many Nigerian fans, however, the most important part of Okonkwo’s message was not simply the football.
It was the passion behind his words.
The excitement of representing Nigeria.
The pride in his roots.
And the clear ambition to help bring trophies back to the country.
