Nigeria’s Super Eagles now know exactly what stands between them and a place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations after the full qualification schedule for the tournament was confirmed.
Eric Chelle’s side will begin their campaign with a home clash against Madagascar as the Super Eagles attempt to secure qualification for Africa’s biggest football competition once again.
The opening fixture will take place on Saturday, September 26 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, where Nigeria will hope to make an immediate statement in front of home supporters.
For Chelle, the match will represent another important moment in his rebuilding process with the national team as pressure continues to grow around the Super Eagles ahead of future tournaments.
Madagascar may not carry the reputation of some of Africa’s traditional heavyweights, but Nigerian fans will remember how dangerous the Barea can be after their stunning performances at previous AFCON tournaments.
That opening game could therefore become more difficult than many supporters expect.
Just three days after facing Madagascar, the Super Eagles will travel away for another challenging fixture against Guinea Bissau in their second qualifying match.
Away games in African qualifiers are often unpredictable and physically demanding, making the trip to face the Djurtus a potentially crucial early test for Nigeria.
The qualification schedule also sets up back to back encounters against co hosts Tanzania during matchdays three and four.
Nigeria will first travel to Dar es Salaam to face the Taifa Stars before hosting the East African side in Uyo on Saturday, November 11.
Those two matches could ultimately decide who gains control of the group heading into the final stage of qualification.
Although Tanzania automatically qualify for the 2027 AFCON tournament as co hosts, matches against them will still carry major importance for momentum, rankings and group positioning.
The Super Eagles will then complete their qualifying campaign in March 2027 with return fixtures against Madagascar and Guinea Bissau.
Nigeria will first travel away to Madagascar before ending the campaign at home against Guinea Bissau.
The schedule means Chelle’s team must balance strong home performances with difficult away trips if they hope to avoid unnecessary complications during qualification.
With Nigeria still searching for consistency following recent international disappointments, every fixture is likely to come under intense scrutiny from supporters.
The Super Eagles continue to possess enormous talent across Europe and beyond, but questions surrounding tactical identity, squad balance and consistency remain central topics among fans.
