Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has revealed why Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman will not be available for Nigeria’s upcoming international friendlies against Poland and Portugal.
The announcement comes as a surprise to many fans, especially after both players were initially included in the squad for the highly anticipated fixtures.
Nigeria will face Poland in Warsaw before taking on Portugal in a high profile encounter later in June, but the Super Eagles will have to navigate both matches without two of their biggest stars.
Speaking on the decision, Chelle explained that Osimhen’s ongoing club situation made it necessary for the striker to stay away from the team for now.
“We miss two players because Victor Osimhen maybe he is about to change club, so I prefer he stays at home because if he plays and is not at 100 percent, it is not good,” Chelle said.
The coach’s comments have fueled fresh speculation over Osimhen’s future, with the Nigerian forward widely expected to make a major move during the transfer window.
Chelle also disclosed that Lookman has been excused from the fixtures after a demanding season, revealing that the request came from the player’s club.
“For Lookman, he is very tired and Atletico ask us to excuse him,” the Malian tactician added.
The absence of both attackers represents a significant setback for Nigeria, given their importance to the national team in recent months.
Despite the blow, the Super Eagles head into the friendlies with confidence after lifting the Unity Cup in London. Chelle’s side produced an impressive performance in the final, defeating Jamaica 3 nil to claim the trophy and continue their positive run under the new coach.
With Osimhen and Lookman unavailable, attention will now turn to the players tasked with stepping up as Nigeria prepares for two challenging tests against Poland and Portugal.
